Waking mind, dreaming mind
Delve into states of consciousness with philosopher Jennifer Windt, and musicians Mindy Meng Wang and Samuel Pankhurst
What does it mean to be conscious? Perhaps you think of consciousness as being awake, focused and aware of your surroundings. Are you conscious when you dream? Or when your thoughts wander, free from the tethers of everyday tasks? Spontaneous and strangely creative experiences such as these open up radical ideas of what consciousness means. This evening, look anew at your dreams, daydreams, and waking life.
Jennifer Windt
Speaker
Jennifer Windt is a senior research fellow at the Monash Philosophy Department and the Monash Centre for Consciousness and Contemplative Studies. Through her research, funded by the Australian Research Council, she investigates what our minds do when left to their own devices. What do we think about and how does experience change when our thoughts and attention wander away from the here and now, and we daydream? How does this compare to nocturnal dreams? And how does this change our understanding of consciousness?
Jennifer is the author of Dreaming (2015) and co-founder and editor-in-chief of the open access journal Philosophy and the Mind Sciences. Her official webpage can be found here.
